Minister Kubayi rejects Ghana's claim linking protest to Ghanaian man’s death
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says claims by Ghanaian authorities that a Ghanaian national was killed during anti-irregular migration protests are incorrect, insisting police investigations show the fatal shooting occurred before the demonstrations.
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has dismissed as "factually incorrect" claims that anti-irregular migration protests this week were linked to the fatal shooting of a Ghanaian national in the Western Cape.
Her response follows a statement by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs alleging that one of its citizens was killed during public demonstrations on Tuesday.
According to police, however, the victim was shot on Monday, a day before the demonstrations took place, in an incident believed to be related to extortion.
Kubayi expressed concern over what she described as the continued spread of false information about South Africa's handling of irregular migration.
She said no deaths had been recorded during the demonstrations and that any isolated criminal incidents were swiftly addressed by law enforcement.
The minister urged that concerns between the two countries be handled through established diplomatic channels. She also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that police are investigating the killing and are working to bring those responsible to justice.
The IMC further condemned what it described as attempts to use misinformation to reinforce claims that South Africa is xenophobic, saying such narratives are unacceptable.
