Two people were declared dead after being struck by lightning during the annual Mphebatho Troop Festival held at the Dertig Sports Ground, next to the Mphebatho Library, in the Moretele Local Municipality, North West.
Two people were declared dead after being struck by lightning during the annual Mphebatho Troop Festival held at the Dertig Sports Ground, next to the Mphebatho Library, in the Moretele Local Municipality, North West.
Moretele Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Masango George said the incident occurred on Saturday when severe weather disrupted proceedings at the festival.
“Due to bad weather conditions, more than ten people were struck by lightning. Sadly, two individuals were declared dead at the scene,” said George.
Emergency services were dispatched immediately and arrived swiftly at the venue. All injured individuals were attended to and received the necessary medical care.
Following the incident, the festival was placed on hold as a safety precaution. The decision was taken to protect community members, performers, officials and all those in attendance.
The municipality confirmed that it is working closely with emergency services and local authorities as investigations into the incident continue. The mayor has committed to keeping the community informed as updates become available.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to all those who were injured,” George added.
George is expected to visit the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday.
