KwaMakhutha shooting leaves 11 dead, including pregnant woman

At least 11 people have been killed and three others wounded after gunmen opened fire on a group gathered at a house in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban.

Fourteen people were shot during the attack shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, September 22.

Police said the victims were together at a house when armed men rushed into the premises and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Among those killed was a pregnant woman.

Three people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken for medical treatment.

The attackers also allegedly set one of the victims’ vehicles alight before fleeing the area.

KwaMakhutha SAPS and the eThekwini District Tracing Team were at the scene as investigations got underway.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said some of the victims were allegedly linked to suspected illegal activities.

Police are also investigating whether a possible feud between rival groups may have played a role in the attack. However, the motive has not yet been confirmed.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli is expected to visit the scene on Wednesday morning to assess the situation and engage with law enforcement officials, community representatives and affected families.

The provincial government has expressed its condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed in the shooting.

The investigation into the mass shooting is continuing.
