JMPD warns motorists as heavy rain causes dangerous flooding in Johannesburg
Motorists have been warned to avoid flooded roads and exercise extreme caution as persistent heavy rainfall causes dangerous driving conditions and leaves vehicles trapped in parts of Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has on Sunday issued a warning to motorists following persistent heavy rainfall that has caused localised flooding and dangerous road conditions across the city.
The warning comes after several vehicles became submerged and trapped in high water at the intersection of Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein.
JMPD officers were deployed to the scene to manage traffic, assist stranded motorists and divert vehicles away from the flooded section of the road.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area entirely where possible and use alternative routes.
The department warned drivers not to attempt crossing roads covered by water, saying stalled vehicles could create serious safety risks and obstruct emergency services.
“If you encounter submerged roads or high standing water, turn around immediately,” JMPD warned.
Motorists have also been advised to drive below the speed limit, keep a safe following distance and switch on their headlights during poor weather conditions.
Road users are urged to obey temporary barricades, road closures and instructions from officers deployed at affected areas.
The JMPD has called on residents to report stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions and rising water levels to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Call Centre on 011 375 5911.
