IPID arrests two suspects in EMPD ‘blue lights’ saga
Two suspects, including an EMPD official and a private citizen, have been arrested over alleged fraud and corruption linked to the controversial fitting of blue lights on vehicles associated with businessman Cat Matlala.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested two people in connection with the investigation into the so-called EMPD “blue lights saga”.
In a statement on Thursday 27 August 2026, IPID confirmed that an EMPD official and a private citizen had been taken into custody.
The two suspects are facing allegations of fraud and corruption and are expected to make their first appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 August.
IPID said a third suspect, who is also an EMPD official, was expected to be arrested later on Thursday night.
The investigation relates to the alleged fitting of blue lights to vehicles linked to businessman Cat Matlala.
Meanwhile, suspended EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has reportedly been served with a warrant of arrest in connection with the matter.
According to eNCA, Matlala has also been served with a warrant of arrest relating to the blue lights investigation.
IPID said further details surrounding the allegations would be presented in court.
The latest arrest is reportedly the fifth time Mkhwanazi has been arrested.
