Home Affairs transfers 274 asylum seekers and refugees to Lindela repatriation centre
South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has relocated 274 asylum seekers and refugees from outside its Che Guevara Road offices in Durban to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, following consultations with affected communities and stakeholders.
The Department of Home Affairs has transferred 274 asylum seekers and refugees from outside its offices on Che Guevara Road in Durban to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.
The relocation took place on Tuesday, 15 September, after consultations between the affected communities, relevant stakeholders and the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration.
According to the department, 278 people had initially agreed to the relocation, but four decided not to proceed by the time of departure.
Those transferred comprised 191 nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 76 from Burundi, five from Uganda, one from Mozambique and one from Ghana.
The IMC had presented the displaced communities with two options: returning to their respective areas of residence or relocating to Lindela. Following a series of consultations, the communities agreed to the relocation option.
Law enforcement officers escorted the group during the transfer. Che Guevara Road was also cleared as part of the operation, with the department citing the need to ensure compliance with municipal bylaws and maintain public order.
