From “Doctor” to “Dermatologist”: Matthew Lani rebrands again, Mzansi cracks up

TikTok personality Matthew Lani, previously arrested for impersonating a doctor, has resurfaced as a self proclaimed dermatologist promoting his new Lani skin care range. His dramatic before and after video sparked nationwide mockery and a viral challenge of South Africans drawing marking pen dots on their faces.

Self proclaimed medical doctor turned internet sensation Matthew Lani is back in the spotlight and this time he has upgraded himself to a dermatologist. The TikToker, who once made headlines for claiming to be a medical doctor, has launched what he calls his own skin care range named Lani skin care. This week social media was flooded with clips of Lani confidently promoting the products, complete with a before and after skin transformation that left South Africans in stitches. In the first frame he solemnly tells viewers, “Hey guys a lot of you guys say that I’ve always had good skin but it’s actually not true. I am going to show you my pictures before I started using Lani skin care. This is how my skin looks without a filter.” He then reveals a second video, filmed in the exact same spot and wearing the same striped T shirt, showcasing a face covered in dramatic dark spots. Moments later he shows his “improved” skin, proudly crediting his new range for the change. It did not take long for South Africans to roast him. One user commented, “Did he just use a marking pen?” Another wrote, “He didn’t even change the T-shirt.” A third added, “Yoooooooooo! Chomi, it was really bad, hey.” Lani gamely played along, responding, “But thank God I am now a dermatologist.” Lani first broke the internet in 2024 when he was arrested for impersonating a medical doctor at a Johannesburg hospital. Known for creating content while wearing a stethoscope and giving medical advice, he divided the nation between those who called him smart and those who suggested he belonged in a mental institution. He is currently suing the state for millions for wrongful arrest. Now, the country has turned his latest claim into a viral Matthew Lani challenge. Users are posting videos of themselves with marking pen dots all over their faces, mimicking his dramatic before and after reveal. For now, Lani seems unbothered and determined to keep reinventing himself. At this rate, Mzansi is already waiting to see what profession he takes on next
