Four killed, four injured in Kayamandi mass shooting as gunmen open fire on police
Four people were killed and four others, including two police officers, were injured in a mass shooting in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch. Western Cape police have launched a murder and attempted murder investigation as gunmen remain at large.
Western Cape police have launched a manhunt following a deadly mass shooting in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, that claimed four lives and left four others injured, including two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers.
The shooting unfolded on Sunday evening, 26 July, at around 17:35 when officers from Stellenbosch SAPS responded to reports of gunfire in 7th Avenue, Kayamandi. On arrival, they discovered an unidentified man who had been fatally shot.
While securing the initial crime scene, officers heard more gunfire nearby and rushed to investigate. As they approached, they came under fire from armed suspects and returned fire, forcing the gunmen to flee.
During the exchange, two SAPS members and two civilians—a man and a woman were struck by bullets and rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Police later discovered four unidentified men who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds at the crime scenes. A 9mm firearm was recovered and has been seized for forensic examination, while crime scene experts worked throughout the night collecting evidence.
Detectives from the Western Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luyanda Damoyi, condemned the attack, describing the violence as senseless and unacceptable.
“This senseless violence has claimed several lives and left police officials and innocent members of the community injured. We will utilise every available resource to identify and apprehend those responsible. Those who attack police officers and terrorise our communities will face the full might of the law,” he said.
The motive for the shootings remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
