EMPD officers arrested a 38-year-old foreign national in Benoni after tracing fake electricity receipts to an internet café, where police allegedly uncovered a wider fraudulent document operation.
A 38-year-old foreign national has been arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department in Benoni for allegedly producing and selling fraudulent documents, including fake electricity receipts, smart ID cards and work permits.
The arrest followed reports of counterfeit electricity receipts circulating at the Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement in Cloverdene. Officers launched an investigation and traced the documents to an internet café on Bedford Avenue in Benoni.
In a statement the police said that the suspect allegedly confessed to printing and selling the fake electricity receipts for R250 each. During the operation, officers uncovered a range of other suspected fraudulent documents, including fake appointment letters, traffic registers and foreign driver’s licences.
Authorities also seized equipment believed to have been used in the production of the documents.
The suspect is facing charges of fraud and contravening the Immigration Act. He is expected to appear before the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
