Five people were killed and 26 others injured when a bus overturned on the R33 between eMkhondo and Amsterdam on Monday afternoon.
According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle before it overturned. Six passengers sustained serious injuries, while 20 others, including the driver, suffered minor injuries.
They were transported to a hospital in Mkhondo by various ambulance services.
Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie urged motorists to adjust their driving to suit weather and road conditions, particularly during persistent rainfall.
“Every driver must prioritise their own safety and that of other road users. Let us save lives by being highly alert and obeying the rules. Long-distance drivers must rest sufficiently along the way,” Macie said.
The department said the crash occurred amid wet weather conditions, which are suspected to have contributed to the incident. The bus, which left Johannesburg with 65 passengers on its list, had only 31 occupants at the time of the crash after some passengers disembarked along the route. This corrected earlier reports claiming more than 80 people were on board.
The crash is still under investigation. Macie extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
