Fired EMPD deputy chief Mkhwanazi remains behind bars

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been dismissed, months after he was placed on suspension, Spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe confirmed on Friday.

Mkhwanazi was suspended on November 11, 2025, amid a series of criminal allegations and investigations.

The latest development comes as the senior metro police official remains behind bars after the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court denied bail to him and five co-accused earlier this week.

Mkhwanazi is facing charges of murder, robbery and defeating the ends of justice in connection with the death of businessman Emmanuel Mbense.

Mbense was allegedly killed at his home in Brakpan before his body was dumped at a dam near Nigel in April 2022.

The state has alleged that Mkhwanazi and his co-accused were linked to the circumstances surrounding Mbense’s death.

Mkhwanazi is also facing other criminal matters in which he had previously been granted bail.

His name has further featured during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission, which is probing allegations of criminality and corruption within South Africa’s law-enforcement structures.

Mkhwanazi and two of his co-accused remain in custody.
