Father sentenced to life imprisonment for raping teenage daughter
A 44-year-old father has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of raping his 17-year-old daughter twice in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, in July 2025.
A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nongoma Regional Court after being convicted of raping his 17-year-old daughter.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence, saying the case demonstrated the serious abuse of trust involved when a parent sexually violates their own child.
According to evidence presented in court, the teenager had visited her boyfriend one night, returning home the following morning. Her father saw her approaching the house with a boy and questioned her about him. She told him that the boy was her boyfriend.
About a week later, the accused confronted his daughter and told her he was angry with her before raping her. He raped her again several hours later.
The abuse was eventually uncovered after the teenager's friend noticed her crying at school a few days after the incident. The friend alerted the school principal, who contacted a social worker.
The teenager disclosed that her father had raped her, after which the matter was reported to police. The accused was arrested later that day.
Victim asks court for a severe sentence
During sentencing proceedings, Prosecutor Sboniso Nkambule presented a Victim Impact Statement prepared by the complainant with the assistance of Court Preparation Officer Bhekithemba Sithole.
In her statement, the teenager described her distress at being harmed by the person who was supposed to protect and care for her.
She also asked the court to impose a severe sentence, saying she wanted her younger sibling to be protected from the accused.
The court sentenced the father to life imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
His name will also be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The NPA said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of sexual violence against children.
“A parent bears a fundamental responsibility to protect and care for a child,” the NPA said, adding that the accused had “grossly abused that position of trust” and violated his daughter's safety and dignity.
The NPA said it remained committed to prosecuting sexual offences, particularly those committed against children and other vulnerable people.
It further said prosecutors would continue working with criminal justice partners to pursue perpetrators of gender-based violence while placing the interests and protection of victims at the centre of the prosecution process.
