Ex-Sekhukhune United player pleads guilty to fatal Tembisa crash
Former Sekhukhune United player Mokete Sean “Shaune” Mogaila has pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and failing to render assistance following a fatal 2024 crash in Tembisa that claimed the life of Gomolemo Mavimbela.
Mokete Sean “Shaune” Mogaila, 29, has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a fatal crash in Tembisa that killed a woman and left two others injured.
Mogaila entered his guilty plea on Monday, October 5, 2026, admitting to culpable homicide and failing to render assistance after the October 30, 2024, collision on Andrew Mapheto Drive.
The court heard that Mogaila’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of Gomolemo Mavimbela.
Mavimbela’s mother, Keo, and a 13-year-old neighbour were also injured in the crash.
Mogaila admitted that his negligent driving caused the collision. He also admitted that he fled the scene after the crash before later surrendering himself to police.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed Mogaila’s guilty plea, saying it would allow him to be held accountable without the need for a full trial.
The case has previously drawn attention after an earlier proposal involving a light fine was rejected by the victims’ families.
Mogaila will return to court on November 17, 2026, for sentencing. Victim impact statements are expected to be presented before the court considers the appropriate sentence.
The sentencing proceedings are expected to provide the victims’ families with an opportunity to explain the impact of the crash and the loss of Mavimbela on their lives.
