DJ Duo member among two killed in Blue Valley Estate shooting
Police have identified the two men killed in a brazen shooting outside Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate in Centurion as Oscar Nyathi, popularly known as “Oscar Baxx” of the music duo Malumz on Decks, and Thando Sonqishe, who was previously linked to one of South Africa’s biggest cash heists.
Police have identified the two men who were shot and killed outside Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate in Centurion on Thursday morning as Oscar Nyathi, also known as “Oscar Baxx”, and Thando Sonqishe.
Nyathi, aged 28, was a member of the popular DJ duo Malumz on Decks. According to reports, the victims were travelling in a Toyota vehicle when they were ambushed by armed suspects riding on two motorcycles.
The gunmen allegedly opened fire on the vehicle near the main gate visitors’ entrance lane outside the estate, killing two occupants and injuring two others.
Sonqishe was previously implicated in a multi-million rand cash-in-transit style robbery nearly nine years ago, a case that was regarded as one of the country’s biggest heists at the time.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Blue Valley Homeowners Association (BVHOA) confirmed that the shooting took place outside the estate perimeter and involved a vehicle stationed near the main entrance.
“The vehicle had four occupants inside at the time of the incident. Sadly, two occupants were declared deceased on the scene, one of them being a resident, while the remaining two sustained injuries and were transported to hospital by emergency paramedic personnel,” the statement read.
The association said emergency services, the South African Police Service and forensic investigation teams attended the scene, while Fidelity Security Services assisted with securing the area, implementing access control measures, and diverting traffic.
The BVHOA further confirmed that additional armed guards had been deployed around the estate and surrounding areas as a precautionary safety measure following the incident.
Police investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
