The Deputy Principal of Dinoto Technical School was shot while entering the school. The Gauteng Department of Education condemned the act and said the investigation is ongoing while counselling support is provided to staff and learners.
The Deputy Principal of Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was shot while entering the school premises on Friday morning. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said the official sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is receiving medical care.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The department said that psychosocial support teams, including officials from the Ekurhuleni North District, had been dispatched to the school to provide counselling and support to educators, learners, and staff affected by the incident.
Despite the attack, the school has continued with the ongoing National Senior Certificate examinations. Officials are monitoring the environment closely to ensure safety for learners and staff.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane condemned the shooting and expressed concern over the attack on an educator. “We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The Department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. We wish the Deputy Principal a full and speedy recovery, and we urge law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” he said.
The GDE added that the safety and wellbeing of staff and learners remain a priority while investigations continue. Support services are being provided to help those traumatised by the attack.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet reported any arrests or identified suspects in connection with the shooting. Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
