Court grants Ramaphosa temporary relief, halts Section 89 impeachment process

The Western Cape High Court has ruled in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa, granting an urgent interim interdict that temporarily stops Parliament's Section 89 impeachment proceedings.

The President approached the court seeking to pause the process until it has decided on his separate application to review the findings of the independent panel that investigated the Phala Phala game farm matter.

The court's ruling means Parliament's impeachment process cannot continue until the review application has been determined, handing Ramaphosa a significant legal victory.

In a statement on Friday, the Presidency said the President has taken note of the judgment delivered on Friday, 24 July 2026, and respects the court's decision.

Ramaphosa reiterated his commitment to the principles of judicial independence and the separation of powers as set out in the Constitution. He also affirmed that he will continue to cooperate with all lawful accountability processes.

The Presidency said the temporary interdict allows the legal review process to run its course before Parliament resumes any impeachment proceedings linked to the Phala Phala matter.
