Correctional officer arrested with 803 bags of dagga at Sasolburg prison

A 52-year-old male correctional officer has been arrested in Sasolburg after he was allegedly found in possession of and dealing in dagga at the Sasolburg Correctional Centre.

In a statement the South African Police Service (SAPS) said that the arrest followed a complaint received by Sasolburg police on Saturday, 8 August 2026, at about 2pm.

Police responded to the correctional centre, where they were directed to a man wearing a Correctional Services uniform.

The officer was allegedly found with dagga and suspected of dealing in the illegal substance on the prison premises.

Police seized 803 ziplock bags containing dagga, with an estimated street value of R8,050.

He is expected to appear before the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The suspect faces charges of possession of dagga and dealing in dagga.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged dealing, including how the dagga entered the correctional facility, are expected to form part of the investigation.
