Anti-corruption leaders to take stand against graft at OR Tambo
Top border management and law enforcement officials will gather at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday for a campaign aimed at tackling corruption at South Africa’s ports of entry.
The Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum (BMIACF) will host its quarterly anti-corruption campaign at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday.
The forum, chaired by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), aims to proactively identify and root out corruption at the country’s ports of entry.
Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato, SIU Head Leonard Lekgetho and Home Affairs Director General Tommy Makhode will lead the campaign, alongside representatives from other government institutions.
The BMA said the leaders would publicly demonstrate their commitment to fighting corruption by signing a pledge to take a firm stand against corrupt activities.
They will also call on officials working at the airport to follow their example and uphold integrity in the execution of their duties.
The campaign will also highlight the consequences of corruption.
Incarcerated offenders who have been convicted and sentenced for fraud and corruption-related offences will share their experiences, focusing on the human and financial costs associated with engaging in criminal activities.
The Hawks will further outline its efforts to combat corruption at ports of entry and provide conviction statistics as part of the campaign.
The initiative forms part of efforts by government institutions to strengthen accountability and prevent corruption within South Africa’s border management system.
