Anele Tembe inquest postponed to September after Magistrate becomes unavailable
The long-awaited inquest into the death of Anele Tembe has been postponed to 7 September after the magistrate assigned to the matter became unavailable for medical reasons. The proceedings were expected to begin nearly five years after Tembe's fatal fall from a Cape Town hotel.
The Cape Town Magistrate's Court has postponed the formal inquest into the death of Anele Tembe to 7 September 2026after the magistrate presiding over the matter became unavailable due to medical reasons.
The inquest was scheduled to commence on Monday and was expected to hear testimony from six witnesses as the court examined the circumstances surrounding Tembe's death.
Tembe died in April 2021 after falling from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town. She was 22 years old at the time and was engaged to award-winning rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes, who was later shot and killed outside a Durban restaurant in February 2023.
An inquest is a judicial process aimed at establishing the facts surrounding an unexplained or unnatural death. Unlike a criminal trial, it does not determine guilt but seeks to establish the cause of death and whether any person can be held legally responsible.
During the proceedings, the court is expected to hear evidence from witnesses and consider expert testimony relating to the events leading up to Tembe's death. At the conclusion of the inquest, the magistrate will determine whether the evidence warrants further legal action or criminal prosecution against any individual.
