Actress Asavela Mqokiyana arrested for driving at 198km/h in 120km/h zone

Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana has been arrested for allegedly driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 near Ellingham in KwaZulu-Natal.

In a statement on Tuesday, Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House said the arrest was made by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie during the ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation.

Mqokiyana was reportedly driving a BMW X3 SUV when she was caught speeding.

She appeared in court on October 19 and is expected to reappear at the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The arrest serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are continuing to enforce road traffic regulations as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Between October 15 and 21, the RTI and Operation Shanela teams recorded 421 speeding charges during their operations.

The teams stopped 12,073 vehicles and charged 1,719 motorists for various traffic offences.

Of those charged, 87 motorists were driving without valid driving licences, while 141 were charged for failing to wear seatbelts.

Authorities also identified 112 unlicensed vehicles and impounded 140 vehicles that did not have the required permits.

The Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House said more than 26 multidisciplinary #NenzaniLaEzweni operations would be conducted between October 22 and 28.

A further 15 operations would focus specifically on drunk driving.

The authorities warned that road traffic enforcement would remain strict during the festive season, pointing to the operations conducted during Transport Month as an indication of their approach.
