21 killed in horror crash involving two taxis on N1 in Western Cape

At least 21 people have died following a horrific crash on the N1 between Leeu-Gamka and Prince Albert in the Western Cape.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the fatal collision involved two Toyota Quantum minibus taxis and a Suzuki Brezza SUV.

The crash occurred at about 11.30pm on Sunday, resulting in multiple fatalities.

According to preliminary information, 21 people sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

The severity of the crash has prompted authorities to close the N1 in both directions while emergency and traffic officials attend to the scene.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the affected section of the highway and make use of alternative routes.

Police said motorists travelling in the area can divert via Prince Albert Road Station, taking the R407 towards the N12 before continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West.

Authorities have warned motorists to expect significant delays and to exercise extreme caution when travelling in the area.

Emergency personnel and traffic officials remain at the scene and motorists have been urged to comply with instructions from officials and avoid the affected stretch of the N1 where possible.
