Three suspects were killed and one injured after police engaged alleged courier robbery suspects in a high-speed chase and shootout on the N12 towards Soweto, with firearms and suspected stolen goods recovered at the scene.
Three suspects were fatally wounded and one injured following a shootout with police on the N12 road towards Soweto, after an alleged courier vehicle robbery in Tokoza.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said on Wednesday officers acted on intelligence regarding suspects who had reportedly just robbed a courier vehicle. The suspects were travelling in a silver Toyota Corolla and were spotted on Kliprivier Road as they joined the N12 towards Soweto.
“When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects sped off, leading to a high-speed chase,” Nevhuhulwi said.
The pursuit ended on the N12 between the Xavier and Soweto off-ramps, where a shootout ensued. Three suspects were declared dead at the scene, while a fourth suspect sustained injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.
Police recovered two firearms and some of the suspected stolen items from the scene. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni praised the coordinated operation, commending the involvement of the National Counter Intelligence unit, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, the Gauteng Traffic Police Air Wing, and private security companies.
