The Gauteng Provincial Government has condemned a series of shootings in Katlehong, Vosloorus and Kempton Park that claimed three lives and left five people injured.
The Katlehong shooting occurred in Sophangisa Street on Monday evening, 13 October, killing two young men and injuring five other people, including a 12-year-old child.
According to the provincial government, the victims were allegedly returning from a memorial service at Mogobeng Primary School when a gunman opened fire on them.
In a separate incident, one person was killed in a shooting in Manaka Street, Extension 2, in Vosloorus, earlier on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, a 51-year-old man was shot dead inside his car in Birchacress, Kempton Park, as he arrived home. The shooting is suspected to be linked to the taxi industry.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi condemned the incidents and called for a thorough investigation.
“We welcome the fact that the suspect is in police custody after handing himself over to the authorities. We commend the role of law enforcement agencies in ensuring that the matter proceeds through the criminal justice system,” said Lesufi.
He said the Katlehong case had been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team for further investigation, with charges of murder and attempted murder.
Lesufi also called for a thorough and speedy investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings and ensure that the evidence was brought before the courts.
The provincial government extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a full recovery.
“We urge residents to work with law enforcement agencies by sharing credible information that may assist ongoing investigations. We must collectively reject violence and build communities where disputes are resolved peacefully and human life is respected,” said Lesufi.
The provincial government said it would continue working with law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders to strengthen public safety and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes were held accountable.
