South Africa repatriates 933 Mozambican nationals

A large-scale cross-border operation at the Lebombo Port of Entry saw 933 Mozambican nationals depart South Africa on Wednesday, with authorities describing the process as orderly, lawful and incident-free.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has facilitated the departure of 933 Mozambican nationals through the Lebombo Port of Entry, in what is being described as one of the largest single-day repatriation operations conducted at the border.

The operation took place on Wednesday, 3 June 2026 and involved 349 individuals transported from the Lindela Holding Facility as part of the Department of Home Affairs' deportation programme. A further 584 Mozambican nationals travelled from Mossel Bay under arrangements coordinated by the Mozambican High Commission.

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said all travellers underwent identity verification, biometric screening and immigration status assessments before being cleared to leave South Africa.

Among those processed were 38 minors. The Department of Social Development assisted authorities to ensure all child protection requirements were met during the operation. In addition, 17 individuals who had overstayed their legal entry period were processed in accordance with the Immigration Act.

While the vast majority of travellers successfully crossed the border, seven individuals were denied departure. The BMA said these cases involved people who failed to meet cross-border requirements, individuals whose nationality or immigration status required further verification, and minors who lacked the necessary documentation.

The operation was carried out without incident through the coordinated efforts of BMA Immigration Services, Port Health officials, law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service, working in collaboration with Mozambican authorities.

Masiapato said the successful operation demonstrated the importance of effective border management and cooperation between government agencies.

“The management of cross-border movement must be conducted in a manner that is lawful, orderly and consistent with South Africa’s immigration framework,” he said.
