Police Colonel Ishmael Dawood granted R10,000 bail in assault and extortion case

South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Colonel Ishmael Dawood has been granted bail of R10,000 by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg following an urgent bail application.

Dawood first appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on 21 July 2026 on charges of assault and extortion. However, the case was postponed to 24 July 2026 to allow authorities to verify his residential address and for a formal bail application.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the State successfully verified Dawood's residential address before the defence approached the High Court on an urgent basis seeking his release.

"The State did not oppose the application, and the High Court granted bail accordingly," Mohlatlole said.

The NPA said that the charges stem from an incident allegedly involving Dawood and the complainant in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, in December 2023. It is alleged that Dawood assaulted the complainant during a meeting before demanding money, which the complainant allegedly paid.

The State further alleges that Dawood continued to demand additional payments from the complainant after the initial incident.

Dawood remains out on bail while investigations continue.
