Light aircraft crashes in Midrand, causing major traffic chaos
Emergency services are responding to a light aircraft crash at a busy Midrand intersection, where a secondary vehicle accident has further worsened traffic disruptions.
Motorists travelling through Midrand have been urged to avoid the New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road intersection after a reported light aircraft crash caused major disruptions on Tuesday afternoon.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said emergency services were on the scene in Glen Austin responding to the incident.
The situation was complicated by a secondary motor vehicle accident at the same location, resulting in heavy traffic delays and prompting authorities to deploy officers for traffic control and diversions.
At the time of publication, authorities had not confirmed whether anyone had been injured or killed in the plane crash or the subsequent vehicle accident.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said officers were responding to the scene and motorists were urged to exercise caution and stay away from the affected intersection.
Road users were advised to use alternative routes, including the N1 via Allandale Road or Olifantsfontein Road, while local motorists were encouraged to consider Lever Road and Dale Road.
The cause of the aircraft crash is not yet known.
