From a SASSA household to a university seat: how your grant can open the NSFAS door

If your household receives a qualifying SASSA grant, your child may automatically meet NSFAS’s financial eligibility requirements. But funding isn’t guaranteed, and applications for the 2027 academic year close on 31 October 2026. Here’s who qualifies, what documents are needed and how to apply.

Matric exams are in full swing, and for thousands of families the same worry is sitting at the kitchen table: even if my child passes, how will we ever pay for university?

If your household receives a SASSA grant, there is a fact you may not know — and it could change everything. A learner from a SASSA grant household automatically passes the financial eligibility test for NSFAS, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. No separate means test. No proving your income all over again.

But there is a deadline, and it is close: NSFAS applications for the 2027 academic year close on 31 October 2026, and NSFAS has said there will be no extension. Here is exactly how the SASSA–NSFAS link works, who it covers, and what your family must still do.

The automatic rule, in plain language

NSFAS normally funds students from households earning R350,000 a year or less (R600,000 if the student has a disability). Applicants from those households must submit payslips, bank statements or affidavits to prove what the household earns.

SASSA households skip that step. If the applicant receives a Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant or Care Dependency Grant, NSFAS verifies it directly with SASSA's own records — the financial test is met automatically, and no proof of income is required. Of the more than 868,000 applications NSFAS had received for 2027 by mid-October, about 654,000 came from SASSA beneficiaries. This is not a loophole; it is how the system is designed to work.

One important exception: the SRD grant does not count

Families often assume any SASSA payment qualifies. It does not. The R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant does not count toward automatic NSFAS eligibility on its own. If your household only receives the SRD grant, your child can still apply — but the household will be assessed on its income like everyone else, and proof of income will be needed. The household income must still fall under the R350,000 threshold.

"Automatic" does not mean "no application needed"

This is the mistake that costs students a year. Automatic financial eligibility is not automatic funding. Your child must still:

  • Apply — through the myNSFAS portal, before 31 October 2026. SASSA status alone does not register anyone.

  • Meet the academic side — admission to a public university or TVET college for an approved qualification, and the institution's own entry requirements.

  • Submit the supporting documents — certified ID copies for the applicant and parents or guardians, and the signed NSFAS consent form, which gives NSFAS permission to verify the household's details (including with SASSA).

Think of the SASSA link as skipping the longest queue — not skipping the process.

What NSFAS actually pays for

If the application succeeds, NSFAS is a full bursary, not a loan, for students in the SASSA and under-R350,000 categories. It covers tuition in full, plus allowances for accommodation (subject to NSFAS caps), living expenses, learning materials and, where applicable, transport. In other words, the same state support that helped carry your child through school can carry them through a degree or diploma — if the application goes in on time.

What SASSA households should do this week

  1. Apply now. Go to the myNSFAS portal and submit for 2027 before 31 October. Do not wait for matric results — NSFAS applications are assessed alongside admissions, and late applications are simply not accepted.

  2. Gather the documents. ID copies for the learner and parents/guardians, plus the signed consent form. Because SASSA grants are verified electronically, grant households do not need income documents for the financial test.

  3. Use the right details. The cellphone number and email on the application must be the student's own and must stay active — NSFAS communicates outcomes and requests for missing documents through them.

  4. Check the status. Log back into myNSFAS regularly. If NSFAS asks for a missing document, upload it immediately; applications are closed for incomplete files.

  5. If your household earns just above the threshold, look at ISFAP (the Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme), which funds "missing middle" students from households earning up to R600,000 a year at partner universities.

The bottom line

For a SASSA household, the road from grant to graduation is shorter than most families realise — but it does not travel itself. The financial door is already open. Your child still has to walk through it, and the application window closes on 31 October 2026.
