Former police general granted R5,000 bail over alleged possession of State ammunition
Former SAPS Major General Ntsumbedzeni Mulungani Mphego appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition allegedly recovered from his Midstream Estate residence during an investigation into the death of General Mfazi.
Former South African Police Service (SAPS) Major General Ntsumbedzeni Mulungani Mphego, 57, has been granted R5,000 bail after appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.
The charge relates to more than 100 rounds of ammunition allegedly found at Mphego’s residence in Midstream Estate on 6 July 2026 during a search conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of General Mfazi.
Mphego is a suspect in that investigation.
Further investigations allegedly established that the ammunition belonged to the State and had been manufactured specifically for use by the SAPS.
Mphego is accused of possessing the ammunition without the required permit or authorisation.
He retired from the police service in September 2009 and allegedly had no authority to possess the State-issued ammunition when it was recovered.
The State did not oppose bail, and the court released Mphego on bail of R5,000.
The matter was postponed to 3 November 2026 for the disclosure of the contents of the docket.
