Former police general arrested over SAPS-issued ammunition
A 57-year-old former police general is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for allegedly possessing more than 100 rounds of SAPS-issued ammunition.
A 57-year-old former police general has been arrested for the alleged unlawful possession of more than 100 rounds of South African Police Service (SAPS)-issued ammunition.
The arrest was announced by SAPS on Tuesday, 20 October, following an investigation by the National Cold Case Unit into the murder of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi.
In a statement police said investigators conducted a search and seizure operation at the suspect’s home in Centurion on 6 July 2026.
During the operation, police seized more than 100 rounds of ammunition, including R5 and 9mm ammunition, as well as documents and electronic devices believed to be relevant to the murder investigation.
SAPS said the former general left the police service in 2009 and had no valid reason to possess the service-issued ammunition.
He faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition in contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
