The Department of Basic Education has committed to tackling infrastructure challenges in public schools after a South African Human Rights Commission report highlighted widespread neglect. Officials acknowledge the scale of the backlog and stress that full remediation will take time and coordinated effort.
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed its commitment to addressing pressing infrastructure challenges in public schools, following a report by the South African Human Rights Commission that exposed long‑standing neglect across the education system.
Spokesperson Sihle Mlambo acknowledged the enormity of the task, stating that while the department is working to improve conditions, it will take time to fully resolve the issues. The DBE plans to collaborate closely with provincial education departments and other government bodies to implement solutions across the country.
The SAHRC report highlighted systemic problems, including dilapidated buildings, inadequate sanitation, and uneven access to quality learning environments. The findings underscored the urgent need for sustained investment and coordinated action to ensure safe and functional school infrastructure.
The DBE outlined a phased approach, with some schools receiving immediate attention while others, particularly in under‑resourced regions, will require longer‑term interventions. Funding constraints and logistical challenges mean that improvements will need careful planning and monitoring.
