Dan Marokane’s leadership at Eskom proves that SA still has brilliant professionals

Dan Marokane is not a product of chance; he is a product of rigorous preparation and intellectual excellence.

In a nation often burdened by stories of decay, corruption, and despair, the rise of Dan Marokane to the helm of Eskom stands as a powerful counter-narrative to those still invested in racists denigration.

It is a story that should instill not just hope, but a profound sense of trust and pride in the black oppressed youth of South Africa.

His journey proves that despite the systemic challenges, South Africa still produces brilliant, ethical, and highly capable professionals who can lead the country towards recovery.

A Foundation of Excellence

Dan Marokane is not a product of chance; he is a product of rigorous preparation and intellectual excellence. His foundation is in science and engineering, holding a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town (UCT). This grounding in the hard sciences gave him the logical framework to understand complex systems from the ground up.

He didn't stop there. Recognizing the need for specialized knowledge in the energy sector, he furthered his education with a diploma from Imperial College London’s Department of Earth Science and Engineering. To bridge the gap between technical expertise and strategic leadership, he earned an MBA from UCT which is one of the toughest MBA's in the world to achieve.

To complete his formidable academic profile, he added a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of London, giving him a global perspective on energy and resource management.

Integrity Forged in Fire

What makes Marokane's story particularly compelling for the youth is his moral compass. In an era where state capture and corruption became synonymous with public entities, Marokane and three other senior executives took an ethical stand. They were suspended for their refusal to participate in the looting of Eskom.

This was not a calculated career move; it was a sacrifice born of principle. He paid the price for his integrity, yet he did not break. This is the kind of heroism that should be celebrated in our communities—the courage to say "no" to a corrupt system, even at great personal cost.

A Leader for the Most Difficult Times

Marokane’s professional journey is not a comfortable climb up a corporate ladder. He is a specialist in navigating distressed organisations. His recent assignment at Tongaat-Hulett, a financially embattled business, saw him step up to lead when others resigned.

While the challenges there were immense, it demonstrated his willingness to take on the hardest jobs. This is a crucial lesson for the youth: true leadership is not about seeking a comfortable position, but about stepping into the fire to fix what is broken.

Returning to the Battle

When Eskom faced a leadership vacuum, the search was long and global. Yet, the Eskom Board found its answer in a South African, someone who knows the lay of the land and is committed to see Eskom succeed. Marokane’s return in 2024 signals a turning point. He understands the Eskom environment intimately, having previously overseen massive projects like the Kusile and Medupi power stations. He knows the ghosts of the past and the scale of the challenge ahead. As an experienced engineer project management comes naturally to him and it is a critical skill any CEO needs at the helm of a complex organisation as Eskom.

His commitment is clear: to accelerate the Generation Recovery Plan and create a sustainable future. His message is direct and empowering: “If it is to be, it is up to us.”

This statement is a direct challenge and a rallying cry to every young South African. It rejects the notion of victimhood and embraces the agency to rebuild.

A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

For the black oppressed youth of South Africa, Dan Marokane is living proof that systemic barriers are not insurmountable. He is evidence that education, when combined with integrity and bravery, can still triumph. His story tells our young people that you do not have to compromise your values to succeed; in fact, your values can be your greatest strength as his example have aptly demonstrated.

He serves on the University of Johannesburg’s Engineering Advisory Board, demonstrating a commitment to nurturing the next generation. He is a member of a class of professionals who prove that South Africa’s greatest resource is still its people.

In a time of load-shedding and despair, in the current darkness of economic distress Dan Marokane stands as a shining light , showing that if we trust in our own brilliance and hold fast to our integrity, the future of this nation is still worth fighting for.
